Omoyele Sowore haircut conversation by Adeyeye Olorunfemi
In 2016, I had the opportunity of being added to a group of passionate Nigerian professionals in the diaspora - UK, Canada,USA, France etc. This group is always heated with various arguments bordering on sociopolitical issues. If you visited the platform for the first time, you would think these Nigerians do not have any other work to do than to debate Nigerian issues. They are very agitated. They want a better Country. Many of them have helped other Countries work. Nigerians do well everywhere except in Nigeria.
I rooted for Sowore on the group and so many questions were raised. I took my time to answer and I got them convinced. But a Madam came up with that same observation you also have been hammering on.
Trust me!. I always have replies. I have that of next year already. The below ensued.
Madam: The haircut of a man shows his World view.
Me: It is clear that we have no other question to ask. But it is then jejune to major on minor things. It shows we are not yet tired of the status quo.
How does the hair cut of even World leaders truncate their World view?
How does it make them poor leaders to their people?. The hair or the head?
Where is Putin's hair? Look at Kim Jong Un of North Korea. Look at his haircut!
Is it decent according to your decentometer?
We do not have an ounce of what North Korea has in terms of technological advancement since Nigeria has existed as a Country. From 1960.

Add all of our 'decent'-hairstyled leaders together. They do not meet up with Kim in terms of providing leadership to his people.
When we talk about Perception in Politics, we mistake it for looks. No. It is not. It is perception of charisma and ideas.
If it was about looks, Obasanjo shouldn't have smelled that seat at all. We all know how that Owu man looks. No wonder he is called 'Ebora'. What then was his World View?
Haircut. Looks. We should then have voted the winner of Mr Nigeria pageant in.
At least he would have a 'decent' haircut.
And run away with our money thinking he is still on the run-way.
Buhari was packaged too well in 2014, including clothing him in suits.
Has he worn suits for once since he was elected to power?. We love deceits.
Let's even come home. To motherland- Africa.
Have you seen Mandela's haircut when he was leading his people with strength and vigour? What is his 'World View'?
Even Obama. What about his haircut? Decent or not? You would have to tell me. Do you know there is a popular haircut worn mostly by Nigerians called 'Obama'.
This haircut is styled in a way that hair is left in the front of your head. So many youths in my area were punished by their African Dads then when the haircut was newly introduced. Not too long it became the trend. Even worn by older men.
Why then can't we support our own and in no longer time now, we have a haircut worn by Nigerians and even Americans called 'Sowore'?
When a 'pink' Man (credits to Onyeka Nwelue) does anything, it is called style. But when a black man does same, even better, it is rubbish even to his fellow blacks. Neo-Colonial Mentality!
If Jesus was to contest in Nigeria, he would be told to cut his hair. Because not cutting his hair would make him less a leader to the People.
We always find excuse to postpone our date of freedom.

And the 'room' went silent.
